Every year the AAA all-star game showcases the talents of the top players who are just one step away from Major League Baseball.
This year's game will feature a player in his first year of AAA baseball, Andrew Albers.
Albers, from North Battleford, made his debut with the Rochester Red Wings of the International League and farm team of the Minnesota Twins organization this year because injuries rocketed him up the depth chart. His ascension at the time probably looked temporary, but his dominant play has made him one of the team's best players.
His 99 innings pitched are the most by anyone on the team. His 3.00 ERA is also the lowest of any Red Wings pitcher with at least 30 innings pitched.
Albers has an impressive 8-3 record with 86 strikeouts, not bad for a player who expected to be a relief pitcher in AA this season.
The 27-year-old rookie isn't just at the top of his team's statistics - his 3.00 ERA puts him fourth best in all of the International League.
Albers' teammate Chris Colabello will be joining him, starting the game at first base.
Aces Ballpark in Reno, Nev. will host the all-star game on July 17. Albers and his International League teammates will be taking on the best players the Pacific Coast League has to offer.
