The Battlefords Midget AA Barons extended their unbeaten streak to three games after a win and a tie against the Beardy's Blackhawks at the Civic Centre over the weekend.
In the Saturday evening tilt, Rett Taggart and Blake Fennig each had two goals to lead the Barons to a 5-3 win over the Blackhawks.
Taggart opened the scoring for the Barons five minutes into the first period, beating Beardy's goaltender Brett Willems. Tayler Paddison and Jayden Nachtegaele picked up assists on the goal.
With less than a minute to play in the opening period, Nachtegaele tallied his fifth goal of the season to put the Barons up 2-0. Taggart and Paddison notched assists on the goal prior to the end of the period.
Early in the second, Fennig got his first goal of the year. Less than five minutes later, Fennig found the back of the net for the second time. Both goals were unassisted as the Barons jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
The Blackhawks responded with two goals in five minutes before the end of the period. First, Tanner Quiring beat Barons goaltender Taryn Kotchorek 6:44 into the second. Then, with 8:42 to play, Graheme Fiolleau found the back of the net to cut the Barons' lead in half.
In the third, the Barons made it a 5-2 game less than five minutes into the period. Taggart tallied his second of the game and third of the season 4:35 into the frame. Nachtegaele and Paddison both picked up another assist on the goal.
Ty McBeth cut the lead to two again with a goal with 11:53 to play, but the Blackhawks were unable to get any closer.
Kotchorek picked up his second win of the season with a 24-save effort. Willems made 19 stops in the Blackhawks' loss.
The two teams met again Sunday evening when the Barons and Blackhawks skated to a 2-2 tie.
The Blackhawks scored the lone goal of the first period. With 6:19 to play, Fiolleau beat Kotchorek to make it a 1-0 game after the opening frame.
In the second, Paddison got the Barons on the board with an unassisted goal 5:55 into the period. It was his first goal of the campaign.
The Barons took the lead 6:55 into the third period. Connor Urlacher put the puck past Willem to give the Barons a 2-1 advantage. Cody Clarke registered the lone assist on Urlacher's second goal of the season.
With 7:32 to play, Beardy's tie the game. Fiolleau picked up his third goal of the weekend when he scored on Kotchorek to tie the game 2-2 for good.
Kotchorek stopped 45 of 47 shots faced for his first tie of the year for the Barons. Willem made 24 saves for the Blackhawks.
The Barons are in action Friday night in Unity for a date with the Unity Lazers for a 7:45 p.m. puck drop at Unity Arena. They stay on the road for a 3:30 p.m. start Sunday afternoon in Meadow Lake against the Stampeders.
Battlefords returns to the Civic Centre Sunday, Nov. 30. They play the Midwest Redwings at 2:15 p.m.
