For the 97th consecutive season the Marysburg Royals senior baseball team will take the field.

For the past four summers, the Royals have won the pennant in the Saskatoon Senior Baseball League. This season a revamped Royals lineup will be looking to continue to prosper in the regular season – and hopefully have postseason success.

“It’s a little different look this year,” wrote longtime Royal, Curtis Strueby, in an email interview. “The last couple years we were able to score a pile of runs. We have had a few guys who won’t be playing this year who could really hit, but we have replaced them with some pitchers.  So once again, our roster is full, but unlike the last few years, we have quite a bit of pitching.”

While the Royals play many of their games in Saskatoon, local fans can catch them in Marysburg in June and July. They are slated to take on the Saskatoon Guns on June 7, Saskatoon Outlaws on July 12, and Saskatoon Dodgers on July 19.

The Marysburg nine will look a bit different on the field with players such as Dustin Emberley, Jordan Gerwing, and Shaun Strueby not returning. Curtis Strueby stated each one will be missed in a big way.

Joining the Royals will be a pair of Saskatoon products. Brett Doepker, whose mother is from Marysburg, played this spring for the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. Brayden Resch suits up for North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. Fellow Royals newcomer Ryan Brezinski is originally from Regina and used to play for Bemidji (Minn.) State University and Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo.

Brezinski will be part of a deep pitching staff that includes Matthew Strueby, Paul Strueby, Eric Bollefer, Craig McWillie, Colin Bauml, Dean Jaeb, and Brett Yarskie. Handling the staff behind the plate this summer will be Marty Yeager, Geoff Strueby, and Resch.

The Marysburg infield will include Rylan Korte, Curtis Strueby, Geoff Strueby, Luke Strueby, Brent Puetz, Cam Blair, Doepker, McWillie, and Bollefer. In the outfield, the Royals will use such players as Blair, Paul Strueby, Braden Bauml, Puetz, Resch, Luke Strueby, Matthew Strueby, Colin Bauml, and Jaeb.

Muenster Peewees Win
The Muenster Peewee AA Red Sox demonstrated resilience and clutch hitting while winning a 12-team tournament in Regina last week. The squad was down 8-4 early to the Regina Buffalo in the finals, but rallied thanks to great defence and timely hitting to win 9-8. The Red Sox also came back in an 18-8 semifinal win over the Regina White Sox.

Humboldt AA Dodgers
As of June 1, the Humboldt Dodgers were a perfect 10-0 in their debut season in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s AA division. The Regina Pacers lead the league with 21 points, but have three losses while the Moose Jaw Canucks, tied for second, have two black marks on their record.

On May 30, the Dodgers dispatched a pair of Regina teams on the road. They got past the Regina Blue Jays, 12-8, and then drubbed the Regina Buffalo, 13-3. The Dodgers had 11 hits against the Buffalo.

Muenster AAA Red Sox
In their first midget AAA season, the Muenster Red Sox topped the SPBL standings with a 10-1 record as of June 1. The Red Sox picked up four wins last weekend. At Muenster Jubilee Memorial Stadium on May 30, they swept a doubleheader against the Regina Expos, 3-0 and 6-2. The next day, in Saskatoon, the Red Sox rolled past the Saskatoon Giants, 11-4, in the first game, and earned a 3-2 victory against the same club in the second.

Softball
Area teams are succeeding in the North Central Softball League. The Humboldt 1 squad leads the bantam/midget ranks with a 5-1 record. Wynyard (4-1), Muenster (4-1-1) and Humboldt 2 (3-2-1) round out the top four teams in the division.

In the peewee division, Humboldt 1 is on top with a 5-2 record, while Humboldt 2 is tied with Wynyard for second with a 4-2 record.

Watrous paces the mites division with a 6-1-1 record. An undefeated Humboldt 1 squirt team, 5-0, leads its division with a 5-1 Lanigan squad second.
