Stefanie Lawton’s rink is headed to the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw after winning the Viterra Scotties in Assiniboia over the weekend.
A sparkling 7-1 record through the event lead Lawton to a repeat win.
Local representative Christina Goertzen had a 2-3 record at the tournament, but wasn’t able to qualify for the playoff round.
They got off to a good start with a 7-4 win over Team Fleming in their first game of the weekend.
Back to back losses to eventual runner-up Team Vey 11-4 and Team Barker 7-6 put them in a tough position going into their next matchup.
They bounced back however, defeating Michelle Englot’s rink 8-4 to even their record at 2-2.
The win set up a must-win matchup with Team Eberle from Regina the following day.
The game didn’t start off great for Goertzen, as they gave up two in the first end.
Tied at three after four ends, Team Eberle began to pull away in the fifth; scoring twice before adding a single in the seventh and two more in the eighth and hanging on for the 8-6 win.
Meantime in Corner Brook, Nfld, Battleford native Cole Tenetuik and his team are battling for the chance to represent Canada at the 2015 World Junior Curling Championship in Estonia.
A 6-3 record through Thursday afternoon has them in good position to earn a berth into the playoff round.
The tournament runs until Feb. 1.
