Battlefords Lawn Bowling Club hosted a grassroots tournament Aug. 8-10. The first game was played Friday evening. It was just completed when the skies opened and the rain poured. After a brief time enjoying refreshments, everyone headed for home or hotels. The bowlers from the Saskatoon Nutana Club drove home in the downpour. The next morning they reported that it was not a pleasant drive.

The rest of the weekend provided perfect bowling weather. Every participant played six games and between games enjoyed breakfasts, lunches and a roast beef supper provided by the host club.

In the doubles draw, Saskatoon Nutana's Don MacIsaac and Battlefords Lawn Bowling Club's Lorna McLean won the gold medal. Battlefords' Verne Iverson and Saskatoon Nutana's Eileen McLelland finished second, followed by Saskatoon Nutana's Cam McLelland and Battlefords' Mel Walker.

In the triples tournament, Iverson, Saskatoon Nutana's Anne Mathewson and Regina's John Whiting finished in first. Mel Walker, Eileen McLelland and Don MacIsaac took home the silver. Battlefords' Judy Walker, Battlefords' Arlene Walker and Cam McLelland finished in third.

Grassroots tournaments are sponsored by Bowls Sask. Inc. Various cities take turns hosting this yearly tournament. Members of the Battlefords club were responsible for preparing the greens (where the games are played), catering the meals and assisting the officials. MacIsaac, a Bowls Sask. executive member, officiated the tournament.
