The Greg Moro trade from December 2015 is the gift that keeps on giving for the Humboldt Broncos as they received another piece as a result of that trade this week acquiring Ryan Straschnitzki from the Whitecourt Wolverines.

Moro was originally dealt from the Broncos to the Lloydminster Bobcats in exchange for players to be named later.

Those players turned into Graydon Smith, who was subsequently dealt to Sherwood Park for Luke Kempf, and Morgan Messenger, who was traded to Whitecourt for Stephen Wack, and players to be named later.

The first player came back to the Broncos in the summer, as they received goaltender Sam-Jaxon Visscher, who has started three of the Broncos’ first five games this season.

Straschnitzki was picked up last week as the final player involved in the deal.

Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan was really pleased to pick Straschnitzki up in the deal, noting he is a calm players, who distributes the puck well and does not get overwhelmed by pressure.

“I got a chance to watch him at the Telus Cup last year… I really liked what I saw. I liked his demeanor, I liked his skill set. We really tried hard to get him out here this summer unfortunately he picked Whitecourt.”

While finalizing the deal, Haugan says, “if we could get Ryan we would be very happy.”

The 18-year-old Airdrie, Alta. native comes to the Broncos with five games of Alberta Junior Hockey League experience, but spent most of last season playing with the Leduc Oil Kings Midget AAA team, who finished fifth at the 2017 Telus Cup.
Straschnitzki finished last season with 12 points in 34 regular season games, before adding nine points in 12 playoff games with the Oil Kings.
