Combines edge Beaver Blues in high-scoring exhibition contest

Mike Pylypow had four goals and an assist in the Meota Combines' 9-6 win over the Battleford Beaver Blues in an SPHL exhibtion game Oct. 16 at Battleford Arena.

Meota jumped out to a 2-0 lead before eight minutes were played. Brett Miller and Pylypow both beat Beaver Blues goaltender Mitch Hawtin. Battleford got back in the game with two quick goals of their own. Brent Salzl and Jerome Boucher both scored to even the game at two. Pylypow scored his second of the period with 1:13 to play as the Combines led 3-2.

In the second, the Beaver Blues tied the game again on a goal from Mike Nelson. The Combines then scored four consecutive goals to build a 7-3 lead after two periods. In that run, Pylypow picked up two goals while Jesse Burt and Brody Tatchel each found the back of the net once.

Mike Sylvester took the Beaver Blues' net for the third period. Six minutes into the period, Daxen Collins put the puck past Sylvester to give the Combines an 8-3 lead.

The Beaver Blues responded with three goals in four minutes. Jon Kachur, twice, and Vaughn Penley were the goal scorers during that stretch.

The Combines sealed it late in the third on Burt's second goal of the game, making it a 9-6 final.

The SPHL's regular season gets underway at the end of November. The Combines open their schedule on the road against 2014-15 SPHL champion Cut Knife Colts. Meota plays their first home game of the season Nov. 29 at the Civic Centre.

The Beaver Blues get their season underway Nov. 22 at Battleford Arena against the Hafford Hawks, formerly known as the Mustangs.
