Cut Knife brings silver back to Northwest

Paradise Hill hosted the 3A girls championship on the weekend, but it was another Northwest team earning a medal and carrying a perfect record into the final.

Cut Knife are 2011, provincial silver medalists. This is the third consecutive provincial medal for Cut Knife after a silver in 2009 and gold in 2010.

Paradise Hill hosted the 3A girls championship on the weekend, but it was another Northwest team earning a medal and carrying a perfect record into the final.

Cut Knife rolled over their competition not losing a set and going 4-0 with wins against Outlook LCBI, Carrot River, Rocanville and Southey in the round robin.

In the other pool, the host team went 2-2 in the round robin. Paradise Hill started the weekend with a 25-21, 25-18 win over Langernburg Friday afternoon. Later that day, they suffered their first loss at the hands of Waldheim by scores of 25-21, 25-10. Paradise Hill lost their next game to Wakaw 25-16, 25-23, but finished the round robin off with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 win over Macklin.

In the playoffs, Cut Knife continued their perfect play beating Langenburg 25-20 and 25-23 in the quarter-final while Paradise Hill battled Rocanville to three sets, but lost 22-25, 25-18, 25-13 and were eliminated.

In the semifinal, Cut Knife faced Waldheim and again won in straight sets 25-20, 25-20. Cut Knife earned a berth in the gold medal match, but Wakaw was just too much for Cut Knife. Wakaw won the gold with 25-12, 25-10 scores while Cut Knife earned a silver medal.

In Yellow Grass, Medstead competed in the 1A girls' provincial draw and went 1-3 in their pool. Medstead started the weekend with a three set loss to Fox Valley, then lost 25-23, 25-21 to Rouleau and 25-13, 25-15 to Holdfast Friday. Saturday, Medstead earned their first win and it started with a back-and-forth battle in the first set against Moosbank. Medstead trailed the first set 24-23, but came from behind to win 26-24. In the second set it was more of the to same in the beginning, but Moosbank pulled away with a 25-15 win. In the third set it was close all the way, separated by just one or two points all the way to 25. Medstead trailed 23-21, but broke serve and won the game with a third set 25-23 victory to clinch a playoff spot.

In the quarter-finals, Medstead faced Loreburn, who would go on to win the provincial title. Loreburn won by 25-13, 25-18 scores over Medstead bringing the Mustangs' season to an end.

At the 4A level, Maidstone represented the Northwest and despite some close games they missed the playoffs after four straight losses in Rosetown. Those losses came against Oxbow, the eventual provincial champions, Rosetown, Caronport and Wynyard.
