Defending champs undefeated in Junior Provincial curling championships

Brady Scharback and Jessica Hanson are on pace to repeat as junior provincial champions.

Both rinks went undefeated in the round robin of the Junior Men's and Junior Women's Provincial Championships respectively held last week at the Northland Power Curling Centre.

Scharback's tournament started Friday afternoon against Cole Tenetuik's rink. Tenetuik, originally from the Battlefords but curling out of Moose Jaw, took Scharback's Saskatoon rink to the limit. Tenetuik held a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth end with the hammer. However, Scharback stole a point in the ninth and used the hammer to score one in the 10th to win the match.

It was the closest match of the tournament for the Scharback rink. He defeated Kevin Haines of Regina 9-2 in seven ends, Justin Anderson of Saskatoon 9-2 in nine ends, Jeremy Ven Der Buhs of Sutherland 7-4 and Austin Williamson of Regina 8-5 after scoring three in the 10th end.

Team Tenetuik also advanced to the page playoffs, winning their next four games of the round robin to finish second in Pool A behind Scharback. His rink scored victories over Williamson 9-3 in eight ends, Ven Der Buhs 7-3 in nine ends, Haines 10-8 after scoring two in the 11th and Anderson 14-3 in eight.

In Pool B, Tyler Hartung of Langenburg earned top spot by winning all five games. Chad Lang of Saskatoon finished second in the pool. The two teams played a tough match in their tournament opener. After Lang took a 5-4 lead in the ninth, Hartung scored two with the hammer in the 10th to take the match.

On the women's side, Hanson's Saskatoon rink finished first in Pool A. Danielle Bertsch of Saskatoon finished second in the pool. Hanson beat Brooke Tokarz of Saskatoon 6-3, Kaitlon Corbin of Moose Jaw 8-7 in 11 ends, Courtney Orsen of Saskatoon 6-5, Bertsch 8-6 in nine ends and Allyson Grywacheski of Naicam 10-6 in nine ends.

Pool B saw Lorraine Schneider of Kronau run the table to finish first. Kristen Streifel of Saskatoon placed second in the pool. Schneider beat Streifel in their first draw 7-2 after Schneider's rink scored three in the seventh to pull away.

North Battleford's Lisa Chambers competed in Pool B. Her rink finished the tournament with a 1-4 record. Their lone win came in the last match up of the tournament, defeating Rachel Erickson of Maryfield 8-2 in six ends.

The final of the both the men's and women's tournaments will take place Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
