Mud and smoke filled the air, making the crowd go wild at the 39th annual JCI Demolition Derby.

The derby was held on June 27, during the annual Humboldt Summer Sizzler and rodeo.

There were 30 entries from across the province in the event.

There were six rounds, with five cars in each round. The winner of each round automatically qualified for the final round of the event.

After all six rounds were completed, losers with running cars from the previous rounds were invited back into the ring to compete in the cripple round, for a spot in the final.

When the dust from the final round cleared, Ryan Atkins of Nipawin was declared the winner of the $1,500 grand prize.

Matt Schidlowsky of Humboldt was a close second in the final round. He was the underdog, having won the cripple round.

After the main derby, a Powder Puff round was held for female fans.

Women were allowed to talk the men with running cars into letting them take a turn in the ring. The entry fee for the women was $20.

There were 12 women officially entered in the Powder Puff round.

The winner of the round was Melissa Winters, driving Corey Fisher's car.

Over 1,300 people attended the event this year. Proceeds from the derby will go to the Humboldt Spray Park.
