Eagles soar to top of standings

The defending North Saskatchewan River Hockey League champs have started the new season right where they left off last year. The St. Walburg Eagles have jumped out to a perfect 4-0-0 start to the season after two more wins on the weekend.

Friday, the Eagles hosted the Meadow Lake Stampeders and needed overtime to hand Meadow Lake its first loss of the season.

Duane Larre's second goal of the game was the game winner in overtime while Sheldon Williamson also contributed with two goals and two assists. John Larre and Kevin Nasby were the other goal scorers for the Eagles.

Meadow Lake's offence was led by Calvin Fiddler's two goals. Ashton McIntyre, Cole Fern and Jace Anderson had solo goals.

Bryan Bridges was the winning goalie with Rick Dallyn taking the loss.

The next night, it was a chippy, rough game between the rival St. Walburg and the Paradise Hill Hawks.

The Eagles' led 3-2 heading into the third period before they scored four unanswered goals for the 7-2 victory. This time Trevor Novak was in net for the Eagles, as Jordan Fuder had a hat trick and two assists in the game. Duane Larre had two goals and two assists and Ryan Larre and Nasby also contributed with single goals.

Derek Jeanotte had Paradise Hill's only goals.

In Paradise Hill's first game of the weekend, they faced Maidstone and fell 6-3. Brett Harrison and Rory Gregoire both had three point nights in the win. Greg Mercer and Jamie and Tyler Johnston scored once each for Maidstone.

Maidstone looked to continue their winning ways Saturday night in Wilkie, and did so with a 9-6 win over the Outlaws. Gregoire had four goals and three assists while Harrison had three goals and three assists in the win. Dustin MacDonald earned his second win in two nights.

Will Rathje was Wilkie's top scorer with two goals and an assist.

Wilkie also played twice on the weekend, as they hosted Turtleford Friday. After trailing 5-2 heading into the third period, Wilkie stormed back to win 7-5.

Troy Watt had two goals, while Mitch Suchan, David Schell, Barrett Penner, Brett Gerein and Rick Cey scored for the home team. Jared Herle earned his second win of the season.

Turtleford's goals came from Darren Delainey, who had two, and Kyle Dodgson, Jordan Macnab and Luke Zbaraschuk.

The other game on the weekend had Edam in Meadow Lake. The Stampeders had a 3-0 lead going into the third period, but goals by Brennen Weitzel, Joel Budd and Brody Roach tied the game and forced overtime.

Nothing was settled in the overtime period. Eventually in the shootout, Fern scored the game winning goal for Meadow Lake.

Darren Caron, Dustin Gorst and Ashton McIntyre scored for Meadow Lake in regulation.

Friday Spiritwood is scheduled to start their season against St. Walburg while Turtleford and Maidstone faceoff. Saturday, St. Walburg plays Wilkie and Meadow Lake faces Maidstone.

The Wednesday night game between Paradise Hill and Turtleford was postponed, but no rescheduled date has been set.
