The damp weather over the last week did not slow down the streaking Midwest Expos or the Border City Blue Jays.
Both the Expos and the Blue Jays were riding six-game win streaks entering play Wednesday night.
The Expos began last week's action at home June 3 against the North Battleford Beavers. Midwest hung on to edge the Beavers 8-7.
The Expos kept their win streak alive with a 10-5 win June 4 in Edam against the Blue Sox. Dion Forget pitched a complete game for Midwest while giving up five runs, striking out five and walking one batter. Matt Macissac led the offensive charge for the Expos, going 3 for 4 on the evening, scoring three times and stealing one base.
Kelly Baillargeon pitched five innings to pick up the loss. He gave up seven earned runs and eight hits and struck out five batters. Brennan Weitzel went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Blue Sox.
Two other games were rained out Thursday night. The Lloydminster Twins trip to Wilkie was put on hold due to the weather and the North Battleford Beavers game against the Standard Hill Lakers was postponed due to field conditions.
The Mervin Flyers earned their first win of the season Friday night in Edam, downing the Blue Sox 5-1. Jon Connacher got the win as he scattered seven hits over six innings. Riley Macnab picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning. Jordan Macnab drove in two runs while going 2 for 4 at the plate for Mervin. Garrett Knowlton, Matt Hougham and Carson Gray knocked in a run each.
Damon Schaefer surrendered four runs and 10 hits over six innings for Edam. In his only at bat, Owen LaClare drove in the Blue Sox's only run in the game.
Border City had their first action of the week with a 10-0 win over the Lakers in a five-inning game in Macklin Sunday afternoon. Clayton Ermel pitched four innings and struck out eight batters to earn the win. Jason Fechter went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Blue Jays. Reuben Baker, Aaron Blank and Cody Mazerolle drove in two runs apiece.
Macklin pitcher Mitch Strange gave up nine runs over three and two-thirds innings to pick up the loss. Curtis Loehndorf had the Lakers' only hit in the game.
Also Sunday afternoon, the Meadow Lake Sox downed the Flyers 15-1 in Mervin.
The Blue Sox got back in the win column when they edged the Macklin Lakers 1-0 Monday night. The Border City Blue Jays also picked up a win Monday night, beating the Wilkie Brewers 12-5.
Tuesday night's game between the Expos and the Cardinals in Unity was postponed due to rain.
In the standings up to date as of Wednesday morning, Border City (6-0) is in top spot of the NSRBL. Lloydminster Twins (4-0) is a game behind the Blue Jays. The Expos (6-1) are 0.5 games back in third place.
Meadow Lake (4-1) sits in fourth place. Unity (2-1), Edam (2-3) and Standard Hill (2-4) are fifth, six and seventh respectively. Mervin (1-4), North Battleford (1-4) and Macklin (1-5) start the bottom half of the standings. St. Walburg and Wilkie are winless on the season.
