Faceoff in the North Stars zone in the first period Sunday versus the Bombers.

THE BATTLEFORDS - The Flin Flon Bombers were at Access Communications Centre for a rare Sunday afternoon matchup against the Battlefords North Stars.

It proved to be a tough, close contest, with the North Stars scoring three in the third period to pull out a 4-2 come from behind win over the Bombers.

It was a scoreless first period for both teams. The Bombers broke the deadlock in period two with a goal from Jaeden Mercier from Drew Kuzma and Logan Fry at 8:11.

The North Stars tied it soon after on Emmett Wurst's 12th of the season from Sam Witt at 10:30 of the second. But the Bombers re-took the lead at the 13:06 mark on a goal from Cole Duperreault with assists from Gabriel Shipper and Zak Smith.

In the third period, the North Stars tied the game 2-2 on Tynan Ewart's goal with 5:19 left, assisted by Ryland McNinch and Zane Florence.

Then with just 1:21 left, Keiton Klein scored from Dylan Esau and Sam Witt to give the North Stars the lead to stay. An empty net goal by Klein finished off the win for the home team.

The final shots on goal favored Flin Flon 41-32 but North Stars goalie Lowen Kenyon stopped 39 shots for the win.

Prior to the game, a moment of silence was observed in memory of North Battleford's Emile "The Cat" Francis, who passed away at age 95.

The win is the third in four games for the North Stars and pulls them within three points of the Bombers for third overall in the SJHL, while for the Bombers it is their fourth loss in a row. Next up for the North Stars are two games at home Tuesday and Wednesday against Weyburn. The Bombers are home to Nipawin Wednesday.
