The Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) mixed curling team is advancing to regionals after coming out the B-side winners at districts in Wadena on Feb. 6 and 7.

“They played very well,” said coach Teri Tarrant. “I was very, very impressed with how they did.”

William Eichorst (skip), Jessi Sperling (third) Jeremy Earis (second) and Morgan Lueke (lead) played five games (against Strasbourg twice, Ituna, Foam Lake, and the other HCI team) in Wadena, losing only to Strasbourg. Tarrant thinks they have a good chance of being victorious in regionals, though she hasn’t seen any team except Strasbourg play.

“They definitely have the talent,” she said.

The team has been playing together since November, but Tarrant said they work well together despite the short time frame.

“They all play the same game … they’re all on the same page as to what to do,” she said.

For her, one of the highlights was when the two teams from HCI played against each other, and that it was really good to see them playing.

“There was a little bit of a rivalry happening,” she said. “On the ice they wanted to win, but off the ice they were still friends.”

Regionals take place in Churchbridge on Feb. 27 and 28. If they win there, provincials are in Prince Albert.
