It was a busy week for eight Humboldt based badminton teams as six competed in the junior district championships and two more competed in senior regional play.
Junior
It was a tough trip to districts for Humboldt Public and St. Dominic teams as St. Dominic failed to finish top two in the girls singles competition and both Humboldt Public mixed doubles teams also failed to claim a top two finish.
Humboldt Collegiate enjoyed mixed results at the district championships as their girls doubles team failed to finish in the top two but their girls singles competitor grabbed the district silver medal.
This marks the end of the season for the junior badminton players as there is no regional or provincial championship for junior athletes.
Senior
The trip to regionals was extremely successful for the two Humboldt Collegiate teams as their senior boys team captured the regional title and the girls single teams captured the regional bronze medal.
The senior boys kicked off their tournament with a pair of two sets to none victories as they knocked off Martensville and Meath Park, before falling two sets to one to Nipawin in their final round robin match.
The loss dropped the Mohawks pair to second place in Pool A, setting up a semi-final matchup against Middle Lake.
The Mohawks pair got the best of the Middle Lake tandem, winning two sets to none to exact some revenge from the district championships, where Middle Lake emerged victorious.
The win set up a final rematch with Nipawin, which HCI won two sets to one claiming the regional championship.
The win also claimed the Mohawks pair a spot at provincials in Weyburn on May 13.
In senior girls singles action, Humboldt Collegiate kicked off the tournament with a two sets to none victory over Clavet before losing two sets to none to Prince Albert Carlton and two sets to one to Choiceland.
The two losses left Humboldt Collegiate in a three-way tie for second place, but due to having the best sets won to lost ratio of the three tied teams HCI claimed second spot and a berth in the semi-finals.
The semi-finals did not go so well as Humboldt Collegiate was knocked off two sets to none by Osler VCA, sending them into the bronze medal match.
In the bronze medal final Humboldt Collegiate rebounded beautifully as they knocked off Debden two sets to one to claim the bronze medal.
Despite picking up the bronze medal HCI failed to qualify for the provincial championships in girls singles as only the top two finishers at regionals earn provincial berths.
