Heinrich, Rewerts lead North Stars to final exhibition win

Brenden Heinrich scored twice as the Battlefords North Stars shut out the Broncos 5-0 Wednesday night in Humboldt. It was the North Stars' final exhibition game of the year. They finished 3-1 in their pre-season schedule.

It was the North Stars' final exhibition game of the year. They finished 3-1 in their pre-season schedule.


Ryan Rewerts got the start for the North Stars and played a full game for the first time this pre-season. He stopped all 13 shots to pick up the shutout win.


Heinrich got the first goal of the game 9:27 into the first period, beating Brandon Holtby. Ryne Keller and Rewerts picked up assists on the goal. Later in the first, Otto Mitchell extended the North Stars' lead to two with an unassisted goal.


Midway through the second, Battlefords made it a 3-0 game with a power-play marker. Jake Erikson beat Holtby with assists from Reed Delainey and Matthew Havens. Following the goal, the Broncos changed goalies. Holtby stopped 18 shots on the evening. Marc Audet took the net for the Broncos to finish the game.


The North Stars scored their second power-play goal of the game 1:10 into the third period. Brady O'Sullivan found the back of the net. The goal was again assisted by Delainey and Havens.


With 8:17 left in the game, Heinrich tallied his second goal of the game as Erikson picked up the lone assist to put the North Stars up 5-0.


Audet made 12 saves in 30 minutes of relief for the Broncos. Holtby recorded the loss in the game.


The North Stars now turn their attention to the regular season. The team will hold their kickoff breakfast Wednesday morning at the Civic Centre from 7 to 8:15 a.m. The North Stars will announce their roster, their coaching staff and unveil their new uniforms.


The SJHL regular season begins Sept. 19 when the North Stars hold their home opener against the Kindersley Klippers. Prior to the game, the 2014 Kramer Division championship banner will be raised to the rafters. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
