A special presentation accompanied the arrival of the Hockey Canada Century Tour in North Battleford Tuesday.

A presentation was made to John Jangula who was honoured as a Canadian Tire Hero of Play. The award has been handed out to local hockey "heroes" at each of the 100 stops on the Century Tour during 2014-15, to honour the volunteer hockey efforts of individuals during Hockey Canada's 100th Anniversary.

Jangula is regional vice-president at Innovation Credit Union in North Battleford, and is the current president of the Battlefords Rotary Club. Jangula grew up in Canora where he played minor hockey, and he maintained his active interest in hockey long after his playing days ended, making his mark in various administrative roles in a number of communities.

Among his many roles in hockey have been stints on the board of the Kindersley Klippers, and in 2005 he joined the board of the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association where he continues to this day. He has also served as a director for the midget AAA Battlefords Stars and midget AAA Battlefords Sharks.

Brett Payne of Canadian Tire presented Jangula with a Hero of Play red jacket and with a Team Canada jersey with his name on the back. Jangula's name was also inscribed on the Hero of Play trophy that was displayed inside the tour trucks.

The presentation to Jangula was the high point of an afternoon celebrating grassroots hockey and amateur hockey in Canada.

The Hockey Canada Century Tour, which ran from 3 to 8p.m. Tuesday, featured a number of interactive displays and attractions.

Some of the more notable items included a replica locker of Team Canada's dressing room in Sochi, several iconic jerseys from Canada's national teams including from the Winnipeg Falcons, the Edmonton Mercurys and the 1972 Summit Series and a number of prestigious hockey trophies.

Those were the Allan Cup (awarded to the national senior hockey champions), the World Under-20 Hockey Championship trophy, and the Women's World Championship trophy.
