THE BATTLEFORDS - The John Paul II Collegiate Crusaders have captured the 4A senior boys' provincial volleyball title.

They won in the finals over Meadow Lake on the weekend by scores of 25-11 and 25-20. The 4A provincial finals were held at Moose Jaw Vanier.

The Crusaders dominated play during the tournament, dropping only one set. During pool play they won all four of their matches to finish on top of their group. The Crusaders then swept Melville in two sets and Moose Jaw Central in two sets to advance to the finals.

They were not the only volleyball team from the Battlefords to do well this past month. The John Paul II 4A girls finished with the silver medal after losing the provincial final in Moosomin last week to Moose Jaw Peacock.

In 5A girls' volleyball provincials, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings finished with the bronze medal. Meanwhile, the NBCHS boys' team lost out at regionals in Prince Albert.

In the Saskatchewan legislature Monday, Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill congratulated the local Battlefords teams on their performances, as well as high school teams from Wilkie, Unity, Maidstone and Edam who also took home medals in their competitions.

“I think it might be safe to say that the Northwest region might have the highest rate of volleyball medals per 100,000 people,” Cockrill said.
