The golf teams from Wilkie's McLurg High School performed well at the district tournament.

The sun forced it's way through the clouds, clearing up the afternoon of June 2, letting 16 young golfers from Grades 7-9 from McLurg High School head out to the Wilkie Golf Club for tryouts to compete in the district golf tournament held in Macklin June 10.

Qualifying for districts for the girl's team were Cally Kowalchuk, Kyra Huber and Josie Huber. For the boy's team, Dylan Huber, Cameron Halter, Rylan Head and Nick Gutting qualified. A maximum of 4 students on each team were able to compete in districts.

McLurg's junior golf team, which consists of the tryouts and participating in districts, has been in the high school for quite a few years now. Teacher Nevin Gloe, a golfer himself, led the team this spring, getting a chance to take some of the students out for an extra round of practice before heading to Macklin.

"[It's] great to see so many young people playing around here," said Gloe. "If we do not get more young people playing, then courses and the game could die in many areas."

At districts, the lowest three scores for the boys and lowest two scores for the girls counted as the overall scores for each team. Both teams received gold. The boys tied with John Paul II Collegiate from North Battleford.

In individual results, Josie Huber took home the gold and Cally Kowalchuk won bronze. Cameron Halter received silver for the boys.

"Everyone played exceptionally well," said Gloe. "I am extremely proud of how everyone competed as well as how they finished, especially on such a ridiculously windy day."
