Most basketball teams were in action this weekend, as the junior and senior seasons were underway with tournaments.

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School senior and junior girls both were in Regina for the Tip-off Classic tournament and both returned with gold medals.

In their first two games of the season, the Vikings dominated their opponents, as they won 82-17 over Shaunavon and 96-44 over Regina Luther High School.

In the final, the Vikings beat Regina O'Neill 56-26 to start the season perfectly.

The junior girls beat Regina Luther by nearly 50 points in their first game and defeated Regina Sheldon-Williams Collegiate 61-34.

In the final, the Vikings won 72-20 over Regina Johnson to complete the double gold from NBCHS.

The NBCHS senior boys' team was in Prince Albert for a mini tournament and lost to St. Mary's in the final leaving with a silver medal finish. According to coach Jamie Sommerfeld it was a good weekend with a tremendous effort, but there is work to do on some little things as the season continues.

Across the city, John Paul II hosted a senior girls' tournament on the weekend and entered two teams after one team pulled out earlier in the week.

In the first game John Paul No. 1 beat John Paul No. 2.

On the consolation side, John Paul II No. 2 beat Prince Albert Carlton to advance to the consolation final. There the girls lost to Meadow Lake.

On the championship side of the draw, John Paul II No. 1 beat Nipawin in the semifinal. In the gold medal match against Warman, the Crusaders couldn't handle their size and defensive play, losing in the final and settling for silver.

The John Paul II junior teams were in Langham on the weekend. After a loss to the strong Valley Christian Academy, the boys rallied back Saturday to defeat Hepburn and move on to the consolation final against Warman, but fell short.

The boys' weekend was also highlighted by a half time contest where Riley Loeppky and David Mahmood combined to win the three-point challenge and Riley also won the foul shot challenge for the Grade 8s.

They took the same route, as the senior boys, as they lost their first game against Warman, won their second game against Dalmeny and in the consolation final beat Valley Christian Academy 40-38.
