The Battlefords Midget AA Barons earned three points during a weekend road trip after a win over the Unity Lazers and tying the Meadow Lake Stampeders
In Friday night's game, the Barons edged the Lazers 6-5 in a high-scoring affair.
The Barons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. On a power-play 5:53 into the game, Rett Taggert beat Lazers goaltender Dallan Tuchsherer, Josh Henri was given an assist on the play. Then, with 8:07 left in the opening frame, Blake Fennig scored his third goal of the season. Jayden Nachtegaele and Cody Clarke picked up assists.
Between the two teams, eight goals were scored in the second period. Connor Urlacher opened scoring in the frame, giving the Barons a 3-0 lead with an assist from Paul Cubbon.
The Lazers cut the lead to 3-2 with two goals in less than a minute. Kyle Donaldson got the Lazers on the board when he converted on a penalty shot with 9:07 remaining. Brandt Bertola converted on a Lazers power play 27 seconds later, beating Barons goaltender Taryn Kotchorek.
Fifteen seconds after the Lazers' second goal, Urlacher found the back of the net to restore the Barons' two-goal lead. Nachtegaele was credited with an assist on Urlacher's second of the game and fifth of the season.
Unity responded with three goals in less than two minutes to take a 5-4 lead. Dawson Morrell struck first with 6:38 left. Six seconds later, Donaldson's second of the game tied the game for the Lazers. Unity used the power play to take the lead when Morrell got his second of the evening.
The Barons retied the game less than a minute later. With 4:40 remaining the second, Nachtegaele scored a shorthanded goal to make it a 5-5 game after 40 minutes. Cubbon picked up the lone assist on Nachtegaele's sixth goal of the year.
Midway through the third, Taggert got the game-winning goal. His second goal of the game and fifth of the year gave the Barons a 6-5 win. Clarke assisted on the goal.
Kotchorek got his third win of the year for the Barons.
The Barons were on the road again and earned a 2-2 tie against the Meadow Lake Stampeders Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Shane Hounsell got the game's first goal for the Stampeders 35 seconds into the second.
With 4:02 left in the period, Taggert tallied his sixth goal of the season to tie the game at one.
In the third, Koby Vidal scored with 11:15 left to restore the Stampeders' one-goal lead. Urlacher tied the game again with 2:05 left to play. His sixth of the year was assisted by Taggert and Nachtegale and clinched a 2-2 tie.
It was Kotchorek's second tie of the season. Stampeders goaltender Jesse Demuth picked up his first tie of the season.
After the weekend, the Barons (3-2-2) sit in fourth place of the Centre Four Hockey League's Midget division. They stay on the road this weekend for games Friday night and Saturday afternoon against second-place North East (5-1-1) at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
The Barons' next home game is Sunday, Nov. 30 against the Midwest Redwings at the Civic Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
