Northwest Saskatchewan sent several players to both the midget and female midget zone camps in Regina on the weekend and all the players at the tournament impressed, as most were looking to catch the eyes of the scouts.

The Midget Zone 7 team won their Friday game 6-4, lost 6-1 Saturday morning and lost 6-0 Saturday afternoon. The team's 1-2 record put them in the C final Sunday where they faced Zone 1.

Zone 7 prevailed with a 4-2 win in the C final.

The Zone 7 roster included Battlefords Midget AA Barons Josh Shynkaruk, Traye Tkatchuk, Quinton Cubbon and Logan Nachtegaele. From the Midwest AA Redwings were Wyatt Malenfant, Zach Nedelec, Jared Blaquiere, Reed Delainey and Layne Young. From the Unity AA Lazers were Alex Pernitsky, Brody Ryberg, Tyler Baier, Thomas Duhaime and Blake Robertson.

Those players all faced each other in the West Central Hockey League this season.

Other players included: Brendan Plant and Derrick Oliver from the Midwest Hurricanes, Edam Midget Three Star Marc LaClare. Bryce Neufeld of the Meadow Lake Stampeders, Landon Longmire of the Kindersley Klippers and Wilkie's Kirklan Glassford, who played in Notre Dame this season.

Many of these players will attend some kind of spring camp in the next few weeks and that includes the Battlefords North Stars camp for some.

The female SaskFirst tournament was organized a bit differently this season, as instead of zone teams the players were split into north and south. Athletes were placed on four teams from each half of the province.

Two south teams played in the A final, but North 7 beat North 5 in the B final Sunday in Regina.

The lone local player on the B final championship winning team was Battlefords AAA Shark Jetta Derenoski.

She played against Sharks teammates Rachel Mitchell, Taylor Cave and Mallory Roy in the B final.

In the C final North 8, which included Sharks Alyssa Alger, Morgan Fraser, Laura Harper and Brooke Lonoway, lost 3-0. North 8 also included Dana Hauck of Macklin, who played with the West Central Wheat Kings.

The other north team lost the D final 4-3 in a shootout. Sharks captain Emily Wilson and Latashea Frohlich were on the D finalist roster. Avery Fransoo of North Battleford, who played in Neilburg this season, was also on the team.
