The Humboldt Collegiate Institute football team demonstrated impressive depth while posting its second victory of the season.
On Sept. 18, the Mohawks dominated Tisdale, 62-14, on the road. That improved HCI’s record to 2-0. HCI head coach Cory Popoff said his team is more focused on the execution and the way they played than the score of its second victory.
“It was another step in the right direction for us,” Popoff said. “We have a lot of film we can use to improve our game. Our players are focused on doing that.”
The Mohawks will host the Nipawin on Sept. 25 at Glenn Hall Park.
In the win over Tisdale, Popoff was pleased with the depth of his squad. The Mohawks went deep into their roster and saw many players contribute.
“They competed well throughout the game,” Popoff said.
The head coach said they now have film on many players that they can break down. This will allow the HCI coaching staff to continue to work with the player to get better. Popoff noted in general the squad is still looking to improve its special teams play.
While the Mohawks prolifically piled up points, they also kept the Tisdale offence at bay most of the game.
“Our defence played extremely well as usual,” Popoff said. “Our defensive coordinator (Brian Hinz) had a great game plan … Our defence executed that.”
HCI scored early and often against Tisdale. Jared Giddings started things with a touchdown in the first minute, while Tyson Hergott capped the scoring with a TD late in the game. HCI led 13-0 after the first quarter and were up 34-7 at the half. A number of players crossed the goal line with the pigskin for Humboldt.
“I was pretty happy and thrilled that we were producing throughout the depth,” Popoff said.
The Mohawks were able to run the football consistently against Tisdale and collected big gains when they went to the air. Popoff praised the work offensive coordinator David Rowe has done with the team this season.
