Moose Jaw takes two from Midget Stars

One positive for the Battlefords Midget Stars is they are taking less penalties and working towards giving themselves a chance to be in Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League games. The negative part is the Stars are still winless.

One positive for the Battlefords Midget Stars is they are taking less penalties and working towards giving themselves a chance to be in Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League games. The negative part is the Stars are still winless.

The Stars hosted the Moose Jaw Generals Saturday and Sunday at the Civic Centre and lost 6-1 and 3-2 and weren't able to generate enough offence to earn their first wins.

The two wins for the Generals moved them up to first place in the league with a 6-3-1-0 record. Although the Stars haven't got in the win column yet, there is a silver lining that no teams are running away in the standings. Had the Generals lost twice to the Stars on the weekend they would have fallen to sixth place in the standings, proving it is tight race the Stars would like to get involved in soon.

Following the losses at home it is back to work for the Stars who head out on a southern road trip this weekend playing two winnable games. Saturday, the Stars will be in Regina to play the Pat Canadians and Sunday, they will face the Notre Dame Hounds, who together have just three wins combined.

Saturday at the Civic Centre, Moose Jaw beat Nigel Rempel six times on 39 shots and were 2/5 on the power play. Kihisis Derocher scored his first goal as a Star from Garrett Zelinski and Jordan Braun in the first, but the Stars trailed for nearly 50 minutes of the game and couldn't get their offence going to counter the defensive mistakes.

Sunday, Blair Mahon kept his team in the game after facing 51 shots and allowing three goals, but that wasn't enough.

The Stars managed 14 shots, but did have the lead for five minutes after Carter Danczak scored his fourth of the season on a power play from Blake Young and Brock Weston. Ashton Clark also scored for the Stars in the second period, as Braun and Derocher assisted on Clark's first of the season.

The Stars had Austin Duzan back in the lineup on the weekend after sitting out with an injury and Sunday, Braden Lacoursiere drew into the lineup for the first time, as Reece Fenrich was sidelined with an injury. That forced him to miss half of Saturday's game as well.
