The Sunshine Vaulters is an exciting new group of equestrian vaulters involved in a relatively new sport to Canada.
Equestrian vaulting is the sport of gymnastics on a moving horse. It originated in Roman times and has been used throughout history as a means of training soldiers. More recently, vaulting has become a popular youth sport, beginning in Germany in the 1960s and spreading to the United States in the 1980s.
Competitive vaulting in Canada currently exists in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The Sunshine Vaulters club currently has four members ranging from the ages five to eight. The girls have been very busy since summer, working hard on memorizing and practising their routines in preparation for provincials in Ponoka, Alta. This was their first competition and all the vaulters did very well at competition and had fun.
The Sunshine Vaulters are hosting an information and demonstration night Oct. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Sunshine Arena. The girls will perform their routines from the Ponoka competition.
