The Battlefords North Stars announced the acquisition of 20-year-old forward Adam Smith of Nanaimo, B.C. from the Dryden Ice Dogs of the Superior International Junior Hockey League Tuesday.
Smith, a 6'3" power forward, started playing junior hockey at 16. He spent time with the Swift Current Broncos, Portland Winterhawks, and Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. Smith also played in the BCHL with the Nanaimo Clippers and the Cowichan Valley Capitals. In 28 games played with the Ice Dogs last season, Smith totalled 23 points and 88 penalty minutes.
"Adam is a character player who plays a physical game with a lot of enthusiasm and energy," said North Stars coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg. "He will sacrifice for the team and do anything for his teammates. We have confidence Adam will provide leadership both on and off the ice and will contribute to the team in all situations. We are excited with the addition of Adam to our roster, which will enhance our depth and ability to roll all four lines."
Smith and the other returning veteran players take the ice for the first time during the 2014-15 season Sept 2. The North Stars rookie prospects will make their first appearance Aug. 30 at the Civic Centre. The first year players will play a top-40 game Aug. 31 before departing on the road for an exhibition game in Kindersley Sept. 1.
