North Stars end losing streak at three

The Battlefords North Stars (25-19-6-1) were looking for a solid outing from their starting goaltender, having pulled the starter in favour of the backup in five of their last eight games.

Spencer Tremblay responded making 27 saves en route to a 3-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings (20-23-6-2) in Weyburn on Family Day.

Before the North Stars headed out on the road they welcomed the Notre Dame Hounds (32-13-1-4) Thursday and dropped a 4-2 decision.

Ryan Rewerts got the start for the North Stars, but was pulled after allowing three goals on nine shots.

Sam Aulie got the offence started for the Hounds when he took a centring pass from Ian Williams and one-timed it past a sprawling Rewerts just 6:46 into the game.

Less than five minutes later, the Hounds found themselves on a very quick 2-on-1 from about the face-off circle to Rewerts' right,  and Andrew Cummings faked a shot before pulling it to the backhand and sliding it past Rewerts to make it 2-0.

Four minutes later, Connor Sych mishandled a bouncing puck at the Hounds blue line, and Devin Gerun had a breakaway, firing the puck through the five hole of Rewerts to make it 3-0, ending Rewerts' night.

Tremblay took over in goal, but didn't get off to a great start, as Aulie scored his second of the game on the power play when he appeared to kick the puck into the net.

The officials deemed it was a good goal, and the first period mercifully came to an end with the North Star trailing 4-0, being outshot 13-5.

The second period wasn't much better, with the shots ending 12-5 in favour of the Hounds.

Early in the third the North Stars showed what kind of team they can be when they play at their best.

For a six minute stretch, the North Stars completely controlled the pace of play, controlling the puck in the Hounds zone for seemingly minutes on end, and scoring twice to cut the lead to 4-2.

Igor Leonenko and Nick Fountain scored for the North Stars, who gave the Civic Centre fans some life after having practically nothing to cheer about for the first 45 minutes of the game.

After that stretch of strong play however, the North Stars returned to the way they played for the first two periods, unable to generate any quality chances, and dropped the 4-2 decision, being outshot 36-17.

After drilling holes in the ice on the most miserable day of the year on Saturday for their annual ice fishing derby, the North Stars hit the road early Monday morning for a rare afternoon tilt in Weyburn.

Three power-play goals and strong goaltending from Tremblay lead the North Stars to victory, ending their losing streak.

Jake McMillen opened the scoring 5:14 into the game on a five-on-three power play.

Leonenko and Fountain grabbed the assists on McMillens 10th goal of the season.

In the second, Maidstone native Brock Weston scored his first career SJHL goal when he one-timed a shot past Jack Burgart midway through the frame. Brendan Heinrich and Michael Statchuk picked up assists.

Four minutes later the combination of Statchuk and Weston combined again, as Weston once again one-timed a shot on the power play to score his second at 12:48.

Late in the game the Red Wings scored twice with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker to get within one.

Donavon Lumb and Mike Eskra scored 1:53 apart in the final three minutes of the game to make it 3-2.

The North Stars were able to hold on and pick up the win.

Battlefords now heads to Notre Dame for a rematch with the Hounds today.
