The Humboldt Dodgers have had a very successful debut so far in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s Midget AA division.

Through their first six games, the Dodgers were undefeated. Coach Roger Gerwing believes that preparation has a lot to do with it.

“We practiced a lot in April, and this contributed to our good start,” Gerwing wrote in an email interview.

Gerwing noted that the one surprise so far this season might be how the Dodgers are hitting the ball. Through six games, they have driven in 60 runs. Humboldt players hold down the top three spots in the league’s hit standings.

Tanner Gerwing paces the SPBL midget AA division with 14 hits. He is batting .583 with five runs batted in. Tanner Brockman is second in the league with 12 hits. He is batting .480 through six games with six RBIs and a team-high eight stolen bases. Third in SPBL midget AA hits is Dawson Atamanchuk. He and Mitchell McGrath lead the Dodgers with seven runs batted in. Atamanchuk has 11 hits and is batting .458.

Through six games, Humboldt had only allowed 14 runs. That tied them with Weyburn, who had played five games, for the best mark in the league. A variety of players have contributed to the Dodgers’ defensive success. As a pitcher, Atamanchuk had two wins and a save. Dalyn Smith had not allowed an earned run in eight innings over two appearances. He was second in the league with 14 strikeouts.

Members of the Dodgers this season include Dawson Atamanchuk, Thomas Bollefer, Tanner Brockman, Tyson Earis, Shane Gerwing, Tanner Gerwing, Morgan Gobeil, Mitchell McGrath, Brett Muyres, Carson Ramler, Dalyn Smith, and Dylan Stadnyk. Coaching is Roger Gerwing, who is assisted by Leon Winkel and Rob Brockman. Pam Gobeil is the manager.
