The Northwest section of the province was represented by three school divisions, 14 schools and 51 students at the provincial cross-country meet in Middle Lake and it was Borden of the Central Valley division turning in the best results.
The top midget girls' athlete from the area was Emma Rose Pidwerbesky of Borden who was seventh with a time of 13:11. Jasmine Bezugly, also of Borden was 10th crossing the line at 13:27.
Battle West division athlete at the midget girls' level was Kyla Van De Meutter of Unity. Kyla was 12th with a time of 13:37. Jordin Wilkinson of North Battleford Comprehensive High School, who was second at districts, turned in a top 20 performance at provincials and finished 18th. Spiritwood's Emily Fusnik was 31st, Wilkie's Jessica Karstens was 35th, Kelsi Cox of Maidstone was 53rd, Unity's Megan Babchuk was 59th, Shania Baptiste of Cut Knife was 76th and Shalyn Allchurch of St. Walburg was 85th.
At the midget boys' level, Borden's Duncan Sutherland was 28th with a 16:49 time. Blake Risling of NBCHS was 34th, Tristin McDonald of Turtleford was 37th, Wayland Purdy of Spiritwood was 58th, Josh Orange of Medstead was 63rd, Eric Westad of Borden was 69th, Ryan Howell of Borden was 72nd, Michael Little of Turtleford was 78th, Ryan Abrahamson of John Paul II was 88th and Cody Black of Wilkie was 97th.
In one of the smallest categories this year, Erin Ludvigson of St. Walburg was 19th in junior girls' with a time of 19:21. Hollie Jones of Lashburn was 26th while Brianna Hill of Medstead was 29th.
In the junior boys' race, Tristan Derenoski of Turtleford was 21st crossing the finish line at 21:23. Jeff Toews from St. Walburg was 42nd, Cut Knife's Marlin Nelson was 67th, Kole Phillips of Maidstone was 71st and Shinwon Yoon of Spiritwood was 72nd.
Mikaela York of NBCHS claimed fourth place at provincials last year and had another strong year, but was further down the standings this year finishing in 15th with a time of 17:35, 1:15 off the leader. Zena Johnson of NBCHS was 22nd, McLurg's Kennedy Glassford was 39th and Andria Karstens was 48th, Taylor Hettinger of John Paul II was 64th, Nicole Wagner of Unity was 66th, Kayla Hartley of Turtleford was 72nd, Mikayala Minish of Lashburn was 91st, Melissa Wallace of McLurg was 94th, Taylor Johnson of Lashburn was 101st, Joelle Memmeigam of St. Walburg was 102nd, Shyanne St. Denis of Turtleford was 103rd and Taylor Beamish of Lashburn was 106th in the largest group to hit the course.
Luseland's Colton Upton was 30th in the senior boys' category with a time of 24:01, four minutes off the leader. John Paul II's Justin Baptiste was 33rd, Troy Tyndall of NBCHS was 38th, Kyle Bowey of Unity was 40th, Matthew Hudec of John Paul II was 47th, Swade Starr of Turtleford was 52nd, Brendon Grosjean of NBCHS was 59th, Chahan Karnusian of John Paul II was 71st, Cut Knife's Harley Tootoosis was 84th and Bryton Chickeness of Poundmaker was 100th.
Borden's strong showing put them in fourth over all in the school classification for 1A schools while Turtleford was ninth on that list followed by McLurg in 12th, St. Walburg in 17th and Lashburn in 20th.
Unity was sixth among 2A schools, while John Paul II was 10th in the 3A class and NBCHS was eighth in 4A class. NBCHS also finished the best of any Northwest school team, at 15th overall of the 58 schools that qualified.
Other schools including Cut Knife, Poundmaker, Luseland, Maidstone and Medstead had athletes compete at provincials on the weekend, but didn't have enough athletes to be ranked in the overall school results.
