Brody Luhning was one of the North Stars top defenceman during his three seasons. He's now set to continue his career at the University of Regina.

The Battlefords North Stars have announced Brody Luhning has committed to join the University of Regina Cougars for the 2013-14 season.

The Cougars are members of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the CIS.

Luhning, who hails from Lumsden, played three full seasons with the North Stars, twice being named top defenceman. During his three seasons, Luhning contributed 113 points in 157 games and was regarded as one of the premier defencemen in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He also spent a season with the Swift Current Broncos and played five games with the Regina Pats before joining the North Stars.

"Brody is an offensive defenceman that has the ability to quarterback our power play. He has the potential to control the game from the back end and his addition will go a long way towards filling the void left by the graduation of (team captain) Russ Nielsen," said Todd Johnson, head coach of the Regina Cougars.

The Regina Cougars Men's Hockey Team made huge strides during the 2012-13 season, improving by 16 points from the previous season and finishing with a 13-12-3 record.

"Brody will be a valuable part of the Cougar's youth and will be a player that we believe can contribute to the Cougars continued success," said Kevin Hasselberg, North Stars coach.

Luhning joins a growing number of SJHL alumni in the CIS ranks including 11 players with the Cougars program.
