The Battlefords AAA Stars swept both games played in Yorkton against the RawTec Maulers last weekend.
The Stars scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and beat the Maulers 3-2 Friday night.
Austin Shumanski opened the game's scoring for Yorkton 1:38 into the first period when he beat Stars goaltender Brett Pongracz. Cole Keenleyside and Drayson Skulmoski picked up assists on the goal.
Five minutes later, Yorkton struck again. Logan Casavant found the back of the net 6:30 into the first period with assists from Skulmoski and Brennan Watson to make it a 2-0 game.
With 7:20 to play in the first, the Stars cut the Maulers' lead in half. Derek Frater put the puck past Yorkton goalie Carter Phair for his first goal of the year. Layne Young and Tyler Baier were given assists on the goal.
Before the end of the first, the Stars tied the game. Young scored his first of the year, beating Phair with 2:32 to play. Frater and Brandon Lesko registered assists.
In the second period, the Stars took their first lead of the game 4:12 into the frame. Kyle Salaway scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Kaelen Holt, putting the Stars up 3-2.
Pongracz took the Stars the rest of the way. He stopped all 12 shots faced in the third period to preserve the lead and give the Stars a 3-2 win. Pongracz made 28 stops overall for his second win of the year. Phair stopped 42 of 45 shots faced en route to his second loss of the season.
In the rematch Saturday afternoon, Young scored twice as the Stars doubled up the Maulers 4-2.
It was a goalless first period as Pongracz and Yorkton back-up goaltender Rylan Palchewich stopped 10 shots each.
In the second, the Stars got the first goal of the game on a power play. Troy Gerein scored his first of the campaign with an assist from Kaleb Dahlgren.
Midway through the second, the Maulers tied the game. Skulmoski beat Pongracz with 9:48 left in the frame. Casavant and Derrick Budz each picked up assists on the goal.
Less than a minute later, the Maulers took the lead on a power play. With Jared Hillis in the box for boarding, Tyler Stratechuk found the back of the net to put Yorkton up 2-1 with 8:59 left in the period.
The Stars tied the game with 5:15 left in the second. Layne Young scored on the power play with an assist from Lesko to make it a 2-2 game heading into the intermission.
In the third, Salaway tallied a power-play goal 2:18 into the period to put the Stars up 3-2. It was Salaway's second goal of the season. Holt and Chad Grambo registered assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
Later in the period, the Stars scored their fourth power-play goal of the afternoon. Young picked up his third goal of the weekend, beating Palchewich with an assist from Gerein to make it 4-2.
In total, the Stars were 4/11 on the power play Saturday afternoon.
Pongracz stopped 21 shots to pick up his third win of the season for the Stars. Palchewich made 33 saves in a losing effort for Yorkton.
The Stars (3-1-0-0) are tied for first at the top of the SMAAAHL standings with the Tisdale Trojans early in the season.
The Stars return home this week for a Thursday night tilt with the Beardy's Blackhawks. It will be the first game of the season for the Blackhawks. Puck drop at the Civic Centre is 7:30 p.m.
