The Civic Centre was the scene as some 45 enthusiastic new hockey players received and were fitted for shinpads, helmets, jerseys, skates and other items essential for the ice.

It was the welcome event for First Shift, a learn-to-play program sponsored by Bauer and Hockey Canada. The Battlefords was one of 30 communities selected to host it.

On hand were representatives from Bauer and the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association, who put on a demonstration of how to properly fit a player for hockey equipment. Then the kids moved on to be fitted with their own equipment, which they will use when the on-ice portion of the program begins next week.
