Igor Leonenko took home the player of the week honours after collecting at least one point in three games, adding to his top-five point total and to his incredible season. Leonenko registered one goal and three assists Wednesday in the North Stars 10-3 route of the Notre Dame Hounds. He then followed that performance up with two assists in a 4-2 win against Melville, before scoring the game winner in Yorkton for their final overnight road trip game of the year. The North Stars were a perfect 3-0 on the week, while the forward from Belarus finished with eight points in those three games. He now has 36 goals and 37 assists this year, which puts him four points behind league leader Alex Smith. Leonenko has also been an absolute force on the power play this season and is enjoying his best campaign to date. He is currently riding a five-game point steak.
Levi Kleiboer was named defenceman of the week for the first time this year. The intelligent blue-liner is known for using his strong vision on the ice to create magic in the offensive zone, totalling one goal and 20 assists on the year. Kleiboer registered an assist against the Hounds, backing that up with another assist in Melville. The defenceman was also involved in every goal the North Stars scored during their 3-0 win in Yorkton, walking away with three assists. Kleiboer is ranked 10th in the league in points for all blue-liners.
The top rookie scorer in the country was also named rookie of the week. Layne Young, who has amassed 65 points in 50 games, has exceeded all expectations and is becoming one of the most dynamic scorers in the league. His skill set was on full display Wednesday, scoring a hat trick while recording an assist against the Hounds. He then scored his 20th and 21st of the season against Melville before assisting Leonenko on his power play mark in Yorkton. All together, Young had five goals and three assists last week. The young forward is currently on a seven-game point streak and leads all rookies in scoring.
