With their play and sportsmanship, the U16 Humboldt Hurricanes came home with two awards from the soccer provincials in Lloydminster.
The Hurricanes won the silver medals at the 2015 Saskatchewan Outdoor Provincials in the eight aside U16 girls division. The Humboldt and District Soccer Club team also earned the Fair Play Award.
In the provincial championships final game, the Hurricanes fell 3-1 to the Lloydminister Gmack Drillers. A posting on the Drillers soccer club’s Facebook page called it a “tough game” and noted the home side was “under some solid pressure from the Humboldt Hurricanes.”
Assistant coach Courtney Ward praised the impact that coaches Dave and Sarah Doepker had on the team. He emphasized their dedication, practice preparation, game plans, and “commitment to make better players out of every member of the team.”
“The players feed off the coaches’ love of the sport and continue to grow individually and as a team,” wrote Ward, who noted that the HDSA is always looking for players, in an email interview.
Royals Win
The Marysburg Royals picked up another win in the Saskatoon Senior Baseball League on June 23. Marysburg topped the Saskatoon Diggers, 8-1. Braden Bauml had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the Royals’ 13-hit parade. Eric Bollefer threw a complete game and allowed just three hits. The defence behind him did not commit an error.
Broncos Add Forward
It has been announced that in June the Humboldt Broncos acquired Daniel McKitrick from the Thunder Bay North Stars of the Superior International Junior Hockey League. Broncos head coach Ryan Smith described the 1997-born forward as a goal scorer.
Last season, the forward had 13 goals and 33 points in 50 games for the North Stars. The 5-foot-7, 150-pounder also accumulated 61 penalty minutes. McKitrick grew up in Coral Harbour, Nunavut, before moving to Thunder Bay to pursue his hockey career.

The Tigers assigned the outfielder to the rookie-level GCL Tigers of the Gulf Coast League. The GCL Tigers are based in Lakeland, Fla., where the parent club holds its spring training.
