Terrible winds and rain tormented the young golfers trying to finish off the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour's 2014 Saskatchewan season at the Legends Golf Club in Warman Aug. 23 and 24 where trophies were up for grabs in four divisions in the MJT - Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit Championship.
Unity's Justin Wood finished third in the MJT Junior Boys' 17-18 division, carding a two-day total score of six over par. The 19-year-old finished three strokes back of champion Kyle Wiebe of Madison.
"I feel satisfaction knowing my game is still there," said Wiebe. "It's been a rough year so winning the final tourney is a good way to finish."
Tyrin Foley of Bengough finished second over the two-day tournament, earning a score of five under par.
Despite the loss, Wood is still in first place of Saskatchewan's MJT Cleveland Golf Order of Merit standings. In the 2014 season, he has earned total point score of 1,310 - 38 points above Meadow Lake's Diehl Normand.
In the MJT Juvenile Boys' 15-16 tournament, North Battleford's Kristian Houk finished tied for 23rd with a two-today score of 180. The winner wasRoman Timmerman, 15, of Saskatoon, who pulled through the conditions with scores of 75 and 79 (154) for a two-stroke victory overSaskatoon's Jordan Unger.
"Battling the wind and rain was key," said Timmerman, who added he enjoyed the round with his "good buds" despite the rough conditions. "The course was pure and the greens were quick. It's an awesome feeling to get my first MJT title of the year." Third place in the division went toKirk Humphrey, 16, of Eastend, SK, who shot 77, 83 (160).
Winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition at theMJT - Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit ChampionshipwereKristian Houk, Tenesha Pompu of Carrot River, Trent Genereaux of Duck Lake, and Diehl Normand.
The tournament was the finale for the Golf Saskatchewan Junior Order of Merit. MJT Order of Merit points will now determine invitations to the prestigiousMJT Boston Pizza National Championship at The Legacy Golf Resortin Phoenix, AZ. Nov. 14-16, where a number of Division I college coaches will be in attendance.
