Justin Wood, a 2013 Unity Composite High School graduate, is having his best golf season yet.

Winning his first event in the Junior Order of Merit tour in Swift Current over the May long weekend, Wood went on to also place at the Deer Valley tournament June 14 to 15.

In Swift Current, Wood won the low overall and MJT boys' 17-19 title and expressed satisfaction with being under par both days.

Wood's event in Deer Valley took place in less than favourable weather, but it turned out to be another winning weekend for the young golfer, shooting rounds of 72 and 76 in the two-day event.

Wood says he is happy to win his first two events of this year and hopes to build on that momentum for the remainder of this season and beyond. His next event will be the third stop on tour at the Willows in Saskatoon. This tournament is also a qualifier for the North American Junior Amateur Championship held in December in Arizona. Wood will finish up the The Legends in Warman the last weekend of August.

"My big tournament this summer is the men's amateur in Prince Albert, to take place July 21-25," said Wood. "I've had my eyes on that tournament since the end of last year and I'm going to do my best to peak at this event."

Wood added, "I'm well on my way to qualifying for the MJT nationals which I attended last year in Florida, and this year it will take place in Phoenix."

Wood is employed for the summer at the Elmwood Golf Course in Swift Current, which lets him work for the summer while continuing his golf events.

In the fall, Wood will return to Lethbridge College to complete a marketing diploma. While attending college, Wood hopes to lead his golf team to nationals again in Quebec City, Que. The goal is to get into contention like he was last year in some tournaments. Wood says he knows if he plays like he has been, he can earn his first college win.

The Unity Golf Club, where Wood started playing golf, will be watching this young man.
