This summer's success for 19-year-old golfer Justin Wood was no flash in the pan.
Wood continues to be a dominant player on the golf course after seeing multiple wins this year on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour.
Wood captured the Alberta College Athletic Conference Championship after a two-day tournament held at Cardiff Golf and Country Club in Morinville, Alta. His total score after the two days was of 146, good enough for two-over par.
This was Wood's second event this fall. The win advances him to the 2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Ping Golf championships Oct. 14-17 at the Club de Golf Lorette in Quebec City, Que.
"It's really fun playing in a team environment," says Wood, a member of the Lethbridge College Kodiak golf team. "It's unique in golf because its normally such an individual sport and I found myself wondering what my teammates were doing rather than if I was leading or by how much."
He added, "I must say, to win the ACAC individually, is very satisfying."
Wood left for the CCAA tournament Oct. 5. He will continue to golf as he still has a national event with the Maple Leaf Junior Tour that he qualified for this summer, which takes place in Phoenix, Ariz. Nov. 14-16. As well, Wood will take in one more MJT event in Victoria in the spring of 2015.
"Justin is just beginning to mature as a golfer," said Lethbridge College's head golf coach Trent Matson. "He is undoubtedly the captain of our team, leading through example and I am hoping for [him to] play as solidly as he has when competing at CCAA nationals in Quebec City.I think that when this year is over, it will be viewed as pivotal in his next step, which, I hope, is a transfer into the U.S. college system to complete his education and continue to compete."
