Gov. Gen. announces Order of Canada honours

FSIN congratulates new appointments by governor general

First Nations among new appointees to Order of Canada.

TREATY 6 TERRITORY, SASKATOON – The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Executive is applauding new Order of Canada appointments by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, which include distinguished First Nations Peoples.

Honoured are: Senator Lillian Dyck, OC, justice, senator and chair of the TRC; Murray Sinclair, CC, MSC, former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations; Ovide Mercredi, OC, OM; playwright Tomson Highway, OC; lawyer Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, OC; ambassador Deborah Chatsis, CM; and Elder Ruth Christie, CM, OM.

“We congratulate all recipients on their new appointments by the governor general, Mary Simon. First Nations Peoples have and continue to positively shape society by contributing to the foundation and innovation of our country” says FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron. “We have many talented and brilliant community members across our lands that are making our home a better place to live in. We are very proud our Peoples and Nations.”

The prestigious list of recipients was announced by Simon, who is the first Indigenous governor general in Canada. She will host next year’s investiture ceremony for the recipients at Rideau Hall, her official residence in Ottawa.
