Dear Editor
Are you aware that we are soon about to have a change to our regular diet, in the form of genetically engineered foods. Perhaps you are already eating this type of untreated food. When you buy anything from your typical grocery store, the answer is "yes." Therefore, avoiding them is almost impossible since the labelling of GE ingredients is not required by law and is entirely voluntary.
Health Canada has never conducted independent research into the safety of GE foods. Why? The agency is relying solely on information provided by the companies making the products.
The fact remains despite being on shelves since 1996, genetically engineered foods have never been subjected to any long-term testing to review potential health hazards, including antibiotic resistance, toxicity or allergic reactions. Genetically engineered crops and now salmon pose serious threats to the health of natural ecosystems and organic agriculture.
I ask the public to demand mandatory labelling for all GE ingredients, demand, local, provincial and territorial GE free food.
Demand independent research of all GE foods and GE crops and their long-term effects on people and the environment.
Demand our government bodies ban the introduction of any new products like salmon and alfalfa within Canada's boundaries.
