Do not forget to remember your history

Humboldt does a terrific job remembering their history.

On June 24 I had the opportunity to attend the Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony and what a great event.

It was incredible to see past residents of Humboldt acknowledged for their success.

It was actually a special and cool moment.

When the athletes, builder, or a team were on stage being inducted you could really see how truly special that moment was for them.

All of them relayed that honour and enjoyment to me when speaking to them after the ceremony concluded.

It is a really cool thing that Humboldt does the and is something that is not what you would call normal to other communities.

You look at all of the athletes who have gotten in and all of the athletes who still need to be inducted, it is a long list.

There is something special about the level of sports talent that comes from Humboldt, and recognizing that talent it truly amazing.

Mayor Rob Muench noted during his welcome speech that it is important that the athletes not forget where they came from, but it is equally important to not forget the athletes either.

And the Sports Hall of Fame does a tremendous job of remembering that.

And it is not just the Sports Hall of Fame either. Look around this city and you will find evidence of remembering their history.

Look at Original Humboldt, or the museum, or the business hall of fame, or even the plaques on all the store fronts.

That is not something a lot of communities do.

It is incredible how important history is to Humboldt and it is not something that residents should take lightly.

Looking back to my hometown, we do have a Recreation Hall of Fame, but there is no business hall of fame, or Original Humboldt site, or even plaques on the businesses.

We do have museums, like the Rideau Canal Museum and the Railway Museum, as well as the Heritage House Museum, but they are not very well attended.

Oftentimes I see classes from schools from around the area being welcomed into the museum to check out the displays.

I can tell you despite having three museums in my hometown they are not well attended by school students.

I went to school there for 15 years and I do not remember a single time I was taken to any of the museums as part of a class trip.

History, which is rich is not very important it seems.

So for Humboldt to work so hard to remember their history in all aspects of life is very important and very impressive.

Do not take the history of Humboldt for granted.

Appreciate that people care.
