Naming game getting goofy?

The CUPlex Raise the Roof campaign has come up with some interesting fundraising ploys to drum up support for the project, everything from large foam hammers to the recently announced sexy local women in sport calendar being promoted by a local radio station. While I'm more than a little miffed I was not asked to pose for that one, all these efforts are laudable, showing a creative approach to attaining their goal.

That said, is it possible the naming of the facility's components in order to be commemorated as a supporter of its construction is getting out of hand? It seems that way, with everything from volleyball nets to floor hockey surfaces on the list. But the committee says there is a method to their madness, and they have been thorough in scouring the project, inside and out, to attract more donors.

Naming rights for parking rows (10) can now be secured for $10,000 donations.

In the Northland Power Curling Centre six video monitors, scoreboards, walkways around the ice and even the actual rings on the ice can bear individual or corporate names for a range donations.

Thirteen rows of seats can be named in the Dekker Performing Arts Centre and the field house offers up an almost endless array of items from volleyball courts to nets for volleyball, floor hockey, badminton, tennis and lacrosse.

The donation levels range from $10,000 to $1,000, offering naming rights to those with a smaller budget to contribute.

Committee co-chairs, Rob Rongve and Heath Gabruch, say the new naming opportunities developed after reviewing drawings of each of the CUPlex components.

"Due to the tremendous support in the $10,000 to $50,000 category from local business and residents, we were looking for new ideas to present to donors, particularly in this price range," a Raise the Roof press release states.

The committee has taken on a tremendous task and is obviously not afraid to explore every avenue to attaining the fundraising needed to bring the project to completion. It will be interesting to see who steps forward to claim immortality through this latest list of naming opportunities.
