Saving a tree

The Government of Saskatchewan is moving into the 21st century, and is perhaps saving a tree or two along the way.

The Government of Saskatchewan is moving into the 21st century, and is perhaps saving a tree or two along the way.

Several years ago an environmentally conscious front line worker at the newspaper embarked on a campaign to cut down on the number of duplicate and unnecessary faxes received by our machine. She was remarkably successful, convincing some their email was sufficient and others that one fax was adequate, when multiples were being received of the same document.

With the government, she hit a brick wall. Even though we had received government press releases via email for years, the communications branch insisted we must also get the faxed version. They said it was because "advisories" were sent out by fax only and we would miss out on those if we were removed from their system.

It seems the policy has changed, as this week we were advised the fax system is being phased out. We'll now have to find an alternate source of reusable paper to send through our printer, or (gasp) actually insert some unused paper.

Ironically the news of the change arrived first by fax, in triplicate, and then by email.
