Ah, nothing like April showers to bring May flowers. I had a heavy rain marked on my hoar frost calendar for April 24. It started May 23 and we must have received two inches. Don't ask me how much that was in metric because I'm not bilingual. I only know feet and inches.
I didn't get a vote and I am resisting this metric system all the way. Just another example of big government pushing stuff on people. It was argued we had to change because the world was all going metric and we needed to keep up because we wouldn't be able to export if we didn't have our stuff in metric. I really hate it when civil servants start promoting the big lie. The Americans didn't change. They are our biggest trading partner. They buy our stuff as soon as it is converted back to American. The Americans sell on their measurements and get paid in U.S. dollars. If some back country Canadian company sells into the world market, it is paid in U.S. dollars. Some help the metric system has been!
Friday morning we had an inch of snow. No metric conversion provided. Merry Christmas to all. I hope that is the last crow snow for the year. When this weather clears I have no rain marked until May 5 and then clear until a three-day rain starting May 19. Sometimes the rains might come a day or two sooner. Have a good spring, but be quick. Ugliness at the end of August is coming!
On the home front Eddie has the air seeder just about ready to go. It is just the cart needing some lovin'. When it began to pour, Beverly said "Send Eddie home," so I did. Eddie's granddaughter was with Eddie's wife and she was two-year-old busy! Grandpa Eddie will help babysit. Should be more fun for him than welding on my air seeder in the rain.
In Ottawa some governmental committee has decided the troops sent to Kabul to guard the Canadian Embassy and staff would not be entitled to danger pay. I could not think of any place in the world that was more dangerous. The Canadian Embassy and staff are targets after the military mission there. The Taliban is still using car bombs to create instability. These pencil pushers back in Ottawa are just being cheap and chintzy. If there is no danger, the troops would not be needed. It would be only $500 more per month on a soldier's pay. Which one of the pencil pushers would leave their cushy offices and volunteer for a tour of Afghanistan? Step up or pay up. Treat our troops fairly. They are risking life and limb for Canada. That is the very least you can do.
In other news, Jason Kenny and the government cancelled the temporary foreign workers program for restaurant workers. I have feared that this would happen. The unions have been lobbying hard to stop this program even though they have no workers to fill the need. Here is a clear case of civil servants dictating change of law. There apparently are 300,000 foreign workers in Canada and the civil servants have searched hard and long and reportedly found 200 cases of non-compliance with the program. I would call bull oompapa right here. Were the cases of non-compliance or were some Canadian workers who didn't want to work anyway just causing trouble for the employers? They interviewed one guy on television who complained about some hours cut. One look at him and I could tell that the only way you would get any hurry up or work out of him would be to chase him all day with a stick. Who wants that? The foreign worker shows up every day with a smile on their face. They are happy to be here. They don't come to work drunk or strung out on drugs. They show up every day. They come to work every day. Is it any wonder employers want to hire them. If there is a labour problem in Newfoundland, Quebec or Ontario leave them out of the program. In Western Canada, there are no available Canadians. Leave this program alone!
There is now a confirmed case of measles in the Lloydminster area. It is so easily prevented. Getting your kids immunized is so simple. As a parent, is it not your job to protect your child the best you know how? Does that not include a full vaccination program? It is free. The government pays for it. If, as parents, you didn't get your child's vaccinations done and your child got measles or chicken pox or any of the rest they could be protected from, my question is, "My God, what were you thinking?" You have let your own kid get sick plus you may have started an epidemic. You brought this child into the world, now is not the time to be irresponsible and immature.
