PRINCE ALBERT — The August long weekend is here, and members of the Prince Albert Police Service Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan Unit (CTSS) will be highly visible throughout the community to help ensure safe travel on our roads.

Long weekends are often a time when family and friends get together, head to the lake, or enjoy a few drinks. The Prince Albert Police Service is reminding residents of the importance of planning ahead. If you plan to consume alcohol or cannabis, make arrangements for a safe ride home, call a cab or a sober friend, choose a designated driver, or consider staying the night.

Police are also reminding residents that there is zero tolerance for distracted driving. This includes distractions such as eating, texting while behind the wheel and using a cellphone to talk if it’s not hands-free. According to data from Transport Canada's National Collision Database, distracted driving contributed to an estimated 22.5% of fatal collisions and 25.5% of serious injury collisions in 2021.

While you may be eager to reach your destination, it's important to obey posted speed limits. Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the risk of a collision or serious injury. So far in 2025, there have been 299 motor vehicle collisions involving injuries, this is a 21 per cent increase from the same time period the previous year.

Driving is a serious responsibility. Think about the consequences, make safe choices, and ensure everyone gets to their destination safely. Don’t be the reason they don’t.
