WEIRDALE — SaskEnergy will be performing controlled natural gas flaring at the Weirdale Town Border Station from Tuesday, June 24 through Friday, June 27.

The station is located in the RM of Garden River, south of Highway 55 near the Village of Weirdale. Flaring is scheduled to occur daily from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., though timing may change depending on operational needs.

During the flaring, residents and drivers may see a 40-foot flame emitted from a flare stack temporarily connected to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure.

The controlled burn is part of routine maintenance work on the area’s natural gas line and is necessary to support the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to customers.

Flaring, which is a standard industry practice, involves isolating a portion of the pipeline and safely burning off natural gas. SaskEnergy says this reduces the carbon footprint of the vented gas by about 85 per cent.

The area will be monitored by trained personnel during the flare and for a day after while equipment is dismantled. A water truck will also be on site, and the area beneath the flare will be watered to reduce any potential heat transfer.

Residential natural gas service will not be affected. The Village of Weirdale, the RM of Garden River, and the Garden River Fire Association have been notified.
