50 years ago: Annual Wilkie Air Cadets walk-a-thon to raise funds

50 years ago

Municipal Nomination Day resulted in most RM council seats being filled by acclamation. Exceptions included the RM of Reford with Tom Allen and Robert Kobelsky running in Division 4.

One election by acclamation was of special note – John Heintz of the RM of Heart’s Hill was beginning his 29th consecutive year as councillor for Division 4.

Members of the Wilkie Air Cadet Squadron took part in their annual walk-a-thon, along Highway 14 from Unity to Wilkie. Proceeds were being split between the Wilkie Donor’s Choice Campaign and the squadron’s fund for purchase of a used school bus.

20 years ago

With hard work, the Wilkie Outlaws would ice a team, announced player/coach Aaron Lorenz, who credited bench coach Wally Lorenz for many hours on the telephone.

Unity, on the other hand, lost a team with eight second-year bantams walking away from the Lazers’ AA Bantam camp in order to play with Wilkie in the Highway 14 League. Coach Lorne Nielson was then unable to field a AA bantam team.

Wilkie Golf Club members’ tournament winners were Brody Hoffman, juniors; Ross Johnston, seniors; Dean Nelson, men’s; Freda Hofer, ladies’ and Michael Wagner, juniors 18 and under.

Unity Composite High School students Lindsay Butler and Meghan Weninger took their science fair project – “How does Salt Waste Affect Plant Growth” – to the provincial showcase at Regina.
