UNITY – A recall on Pediatrix Acetaminophen Oral Solution for children was issued by Health Canada Jan. 17.
According to Health Canada’s website, the recall was put into place when routine product testing discovered a higher level of acetaminophen in the product than what was approved and labelled for.
Shannon Ireland, owner of Our Drug Store, confirmed the recall is for 100 millilitre bottles of the liquid. At the time, she did not have any in stock.
“I know we had some, so if parents have bought some recently, please check your bottles,” urged Ireland.
Kevin Kowalchuk at Wilkie Pharmacy also had empty shelves, however, did confirm their stock was removed as it had surpassed the expiry date. Unity Co-op Pharmacy has not carried the product for many years.
With the higher level of acetaminophen in the batch, children may be at risk of an overdose due to their small size and developing bodies. Signs of acetaminophen overdose include nausea, vomiting, lethargy, sweating, loss of appetite and pain in the upper part of the abdomen or stomach. Abdominal pain may be the first sign of liver damage and may not be apparent for 24 to 48 hours. Liver damage may result in liver failure or, in the most severe cases, death.
The product is available without a prescription and is used to relieve mild to moderate pain and fever in children from two to 11 years of age.
Parents should verify the lot number on medication. The lot number is commonly found next to the expiration date. For this recall, watch for DIN 02027798 Lot: MC0079 with an expiration date August 2025.
Officials advise that if you find a recalled product, stop using it immediately. If a child shows signs/symptoms of acetaminophen overdose a poison control centre or emergency health care services should be contacted immediately, is the official advice. Health experts also say to consult a health care professional if you have questions or concerns about your child’s health.
