Ice stays in Unity until WCWK are done playoffs

The U18AA West Central Wheat Kings continue their playoff quest giving fans an extended hockey season to cheer on

UNITY - Unity town council has agreed to keep the ice plant running into April to support the U18AA West Central Wheat Kings in their playoff quest.

Unity’s Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Headrick says, “This is very exciting news for our community as we have the opportunity to support our local players Hunter Sperle and Colby Frocklage, as well as head coach, Pat Sperle.”

The Wheat Kings have been impressive as the underdogs, defeating the first and second place teams on their way to northern finals. Team manager, Marli Shepherd, says the team considers Unity to be their home rink. The team also proposed ideas to help increase funds to keep the plant going.

Coach Sperle acknowledges the support the team has had this year describing it as “tremendous” and says it is appreciated in their goal to extend their playoff run.

Headrick said the last time Unity had ice into April was when the Unity Miners hosted the 1996 Allan Cup.

The WCWK host game two March 26, after taking game one on the road. The curling rink lounge and the penalty box booth will be open.

The team includes many players from Macklin, Kerrobert, Rosetown, Major and Kindersley.

Fans are loving the extended hockey season that has brought them so much playoff excitement and believe there is a real chance of the team capturing both the Centre Four League championships and the SAAHL title.
