McLurg Broncs repeat SHSAA provincial medalists, winning silver

McLurg Broncs volleyball team captures silver medal at SHSAA provincial volleyball championships.

WILKIE — It’s what teams work for all season, a berth to Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association provincial championships being held Nov. 25-26 weekend.

McLurg Broncs had a dominant playoff season winning both 2A conferences and regional playdowns, not losing a game. The team travelled to Regina to compete at SHSAA 2A  provincials championships. Following a perfect 4-0 record after round robin, the Broncs earned a spot in the quarter-final facing off against Langenburg, winning the game two sets to one. This set them up for the semifinal, playing Harvest City, where again the Broncs won in three sets.

The chance to repeat as provincial champions became very real as McLurg had now earned their spot in the final facing Hepburn. This final resulted in a silver medal for Wilkie, the only loss of their volleyball playoff season. Hepburn also happened to be the other team that advanced out of regional playdowns with McLurg.

Four Grade 12 players have now completed their careers with McLurg Broncs volleyball as the school's 2022 volleyball season comes to a close.

Unity Composite High School Warriors did not have to win out of their conference as there weren’t enough 3A teams to host one, therefore they advanced straight to regional competition in Outlook and lost an incredible three-set match to Assiniboia, the team that would be hosting 3A provincials. This still earned them a spot at SHSAA 3A provincial championships.

After day one of provincial competition, the Warriors had a perfect 3-0 record however day two did not go as they had hoped and they were sent to the bronze medal game by rivals, Assiniboia Rockets.  A loss in that match, put the Warriors with a fourth-place finish.
