New Horizons Hosts Century Club Tea

Century Club in Unity celebrates birthdays for those 90 years and older

UNITY — Family and friends gathered at the Unity New Horizons Hall Oct. 18 to celebrate the lives of local Century Club members — folks who are 90 years of age or more — and to honour them, as part of Seniors’ Month activities.

The New Horizons members used to do this for their own club members, but in 2022 decided to reach out to the community and bring in others who also ought to be celebrated. This year they had 11 seniors who were able to attend: Irene Thiessen Campbell, Joyce Newsome, Ilene Peterson, Vickie McCoy, Lorne Swarbrick, Jeanne Cumming, Flo Witzaney, Dorothy Whiting, Pauline Volk, Fran Maze and Doreen Leslie.

Lorne Swarbrick and Jeanne Cumming both turn 100 years old this year. Byron Trapp welcomed friends and family to the event then Melody Kuhn entertained with music, singing and playing a wide variety of beloved and familiar pieces.

Louise Robson introduced and interviewed the honorees. All the honorees have interesting histories and stories to tell. Their advice is eat well, work hard and enjoy life.

Some are still active in community life and all enjoy visits with family and friends. Following the interviews there was laughter and visiting. Ice cream and a birthday cake, complete with sparklers, were served after the program.
